Homegrown Job Training Programs

The goal of the Homegrown Job Training Programs are to help individuals gain marketable skills so they can obtain employment, attain and maintain housing, and avoid future homelessness.

 

Homegrown operates three programs. The Food Service Training Program, the Cafe Market Training Program and the Retail Training Program. After participants complete the training, UMOM helps them secure and retain employment in the food service, retail and hospitality industries. The students attend job fairs, receive resume and job search assistance, and participate in mock interviews. All of these services are provided for FREE!

 

 

Food Service Training

Six week program to prepare you to work in the food industry as dishwashers, line cooks and prep cooks.

 

Program participants will receive: Uniforms, food handler’s card, certificate of completion, job coaching, and resume showcasing new skills.

 

 

Skills obtained include:

  • Food Safety & Sanitation

  • Dishwashing Operation

  • Mise en Place

  • Inventory/Stocking

  • Skills Assessment

  • Knife Skills

  • Knife Cuts

  • Station Organization

  • Cooking Techniques

  • Understanding & Reading Recipes/Culinary Math

Barista Training

Six week program to prepare you to work in cafes and coffee shops as a barista with customer service and cashiering skills.

 

Program participants will receive: Uniforms, food handler’s card, certificate of completion, job coaching, and resume showcasing new skills.

 

Skills and training includes:

  • Intro to Coffee

  • Safety & Sanitation

  • Tools & Equipment

  • Steaming Dairy

  • Starbucks Beverages

  • Customer Service

  • Cashier/POS System

  • Stocking/Inventory

  • Market Training

 

Retail Training

Six week program to prepare you to work in department stores, supermarkets and convenience stores as an employee with customer service and cashiering skills.

 

Program participants will receive: Uniforms, certificate of completion, job coaching, and resume showcasing new skills.

 

 

 

 

 

Application Process

 

The goal of the Homegrown program is to help individuals gain marketable skills so they can obtain employment, attain and maintain housing, and avoid future homelessness.

 

1. Submit Application: Please complete the application, answer every question, or indicate if it does not apply.

 

2. Interview: Qualified applicants will receive interviews after completing the application.

 

3. Notification of Acceptance: All applicants will be notified at least 1 week prior to the class start date if they have or have not been accepted into the Homegrown training program.

 

*Once applicant is accepted into the Homegrown program, they must obtain a Maricopa County Food Handlers Card before starting the class. UMOM covers the cost of the card, and classes are offered twice a month to accepted students.

 

4. Attend Orientation: Be ready for class with pants and closed-toe shoes (if enrolled in Barista or Food Service programs).

Student Expectations

 

All applicants interested in enrolling in the Homegrown Training Programs must be able to meet the following expectations:

  • Have sincere enthusiasm and interest for the food service, barista or retail industry

  • Able to attend classes Monday - Friday

  • Able to arrive to classes on time and prepared for the day

  • Able to attend classes for the entire 6 weeks of training, without missing more than 4 days of training. NOTE: After missing four days of training the student will be dismissed from the program

  • Make sure to bring assigned materials with you for each day of class

  • Able to follow good personal hygiene practices

  • Ready to work as a team, exemplify good teamwork skills

  • Able to stand for 6+ hours

Program Hours

 

Barista Hours: 6:30am - 1:00pm & 9:00am - 3:30pm

Kitchen Hours: 9:00am - 3:30pm

Retail Hours: 9:00am - 3:30pm

    Rio Salado Dental Clinic for Kids Saturday, June 23, 2018 7:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. The Rio Salado Dental Hygiene Clinic will host a free dental clinic for children and young adults ages 17 and younger. Rio Salado College Dental Hygiene students, instructors and dental community members will volunteer their time and expertise to provide comprehensive dental hygiene care to children at the free clinic.
